Yo-Yo Blogging
Why is that I feel guilty when I don’t spend time updating my blog, writing relevant, interesting posts on a frequent basis; with energy, consistency, discipline and rigor?
I’d like to classify myself as a “yo-yo blogger” - not a clinical definition… but a concept.
I don’t believe that blogging is a fad, yet all too often I cycle in and out of my daily routine. I justify my lapses with simple excuses, similar to that of someone falling off the wagon related to their own personal vices.
I created my first blog a few years ago to keep up with the bridesmaids in my sister’s wedding and I didn’t keep up with it after the wedding. This was before everyone I know (including their moms) were on Facebook. I’m sure I’d have a different approach to communicating with a wedding party with the mainstream concept of social media prevalence in 2009.
I enjoyed contributing to both corporate and culture blogs while at MindComet, but I struggled to find my own personal voice and opinions during that time period. Corporate blogging has really shifted towards integrating more personal branding and identities - I’m excited to see that transformation. I also really respect companies that encourage their employees to blog and represent their brand through personal communication vehicles. (I’ll have more to say about this in a future post..)
During that time, I also threw myself into multiple social portals - FB, MySpace, LinkedIn, BrightKite, Ping.fm, Flickr, etc. I tested & tried and finally found a recipe I think works for my personality, social media behavioral patterns and time availability. I’m sure I’ll change my strategy over and over again as the world around me changes.
Ted convinced me to give blogging another try with the use of Tumblr, which I have to say makes it very easy. Now I’m guilty of simply posting micro-updates and I’ve lost momentum with longer ‘meatier’ posts. My resolve is to dig deep and figure out a way to integrate blogging back into my life - it’s a creative outlet, which supports self-expression, candor and an opportunity to get back to something I really enjoy - writing!
More blogging to come….
